Choosing Good Clients: What If We’ve Had It Backwards?
Jul 09, 2025
You could chase clients. You could also choose resonance.
In the healing professions, there’s often an unspoken rule: take whoever comes. Say yes. Stay grateful. Be of service.
But what if that model is the wrong way around?
What if we’re not here to serve everyone — but to work with the people we’re genuinely meant for?
What if the kindest, most sustainable choice is to work with the right people — and gently release the rest?
This isn’t about exclusivity. It’s about staying true.
And it could make all the difference to your energy, your nervous system, and your love for this work.
1. Work with Clients Who Reflect Your Passions
You bring your best when the themes in the room light something up in you.
If you’re drawn to nervous system work and spend time moving your body, you’ll likely feel energised by clients exploring how fascia holds memory.
If you’re curious about belief change, you’ll feel alive walking someone through a shift in identity that feels both gentle and powerful.
We often work best with the version of ourselves we once were — or are still becoming.
Notice what sparks something in you. That’s not a fluke — that’s your compass.
2. Stay Within Scope — For Their Sake and Yours
Overriding your limits helps no one.
You’re not here to fix, rescue, or stretch beyond what feels steady.
Your gift is to be present — regulated, responsive, and safe to be with. That only happens when the client’s needs sit comfortably within your training, experience and your nervous system’s current capacity.
Not sure you’re the best person for them? Refer with grace.
Feeling dread or discomfort before a session? That’s not failure — that’s feedback.
It’s not rejection. It's protection.
3. Choose Clients Who Feel Like a Match — Not Just Those Who Show Up
You’re not a shop. You’re a tuning fork.
When you’re grounded in the work that fits you, the right people feel it.
They may not even fully understand the methods you use — but something in your way of being draws them in. These are your people and will share wins and ripple out your vibe.
You don’t need to shout. But you do need to be visible, in your own frequency, in spaces that light you up.
Notice who leans in when you speak naturally. That’s the signal. That’s readiness.
Embodied Reflection: Who Are You Here For?
Take a breath. Come into your body.
Now picture this:
You’ve just finished a session — Zoom or in person — and something inside you feels bright.
You walk into a room where someone who loves you is waiting.
They glance up, and you smile. Maybe you say,
“I just had one of those moments that reminded me exactly why I do this.”
You can’t share details — but the feeling is unmistakable.
Ask yourself:
-
Who was that session with — not by name, but by energy?
-
What themes were alive — maybe forgiveness, self-trust, identity?
-
What made you light up — the clarity, the flow, the sense of real connection?
-
Were you unattached to the outcome — and still filled with joy?
-
What did you discover about yourself?
Let the picture land. Let it tell you something real.
Self-Havening to Ground the Feeling
Place your hands gently on your arms, face, or palms — wherever feels most natural. Begin soft, rhythmic self-Havening.
As you move, hold that moment’s feeling in your awareness:
The quiet joy. The deep yes. The sense of inner knowing — this is it.
Repeat to yourself:
-
“This is what good work feels like.”
-
“I’m allowed to choose this.”
-
“I welcome more of this into my life and practice.”
Let your body register it. Let your nervous system trust it.
You’re Not Just Here to Help — You’re Here to Choose
You’re not here to take on everyone.
You’re not doing it wrong if someone doesn’t fit.
Choosing clients with care isn’t strategy. It’s stewardship.
When you honour what’s right for you, your presence sharpens. Your work deepens. Your careown journey becomes something clearer — and more human.
So choose with care.
Choose with honesty.
And choose with your whole self.
Because the clients who are meant for you? They’re looking for you, too.
Feeling a quiet yes?
If you've found yourself nodding, noticing familiar patterns – either in yourself or the people you work with – you're in good company.
Whether you guide, support, or hold space for others, the patterns we carry (often without realising) shape how we show up – both in our practice and beyond.
If you’re sensing something stuck – around being visible, feeling grounded in your work, or holding space clearly – I offer 1:1 sessions to gently ease what’s getting in the way.
If you’d value space to refine your approach, reflect on client work, or reconnect with the heart of your practice, private supervision might be the right next step.
Often, the two naturally weave together – we can explore your inner world and your tools side by side.
Because when your system feels steady, the way you show up becomes unmistakably clear.

Go gently
